Clear results were obtained from research we conducted with the University of Wageningen, Netherlands, using our THS – textile heating systems by Kufner to improve growing conditions in strawberry fields.

On average, the picked strawberries were not only larger and sweeter than in previous harvests. Reduced water and gas consumption also resulted in a significant reduction in agricultural costs!

RESEARCH PROJECT IN COOPERATION WITH THE FRAUNHOFER INSTITUTE

In cooperation with Fraunhofer-Institut für Bauphysik, IBP, Holzkirchen, our development department studied the application of solar-powered heating fabrics to prevent microbial infestation on building facades.

Starting point was the increasing impact of algae growth on facades, caused by increased surface humidity.

This research project designed the incorporation of a heating fabric in the exterior plaster to counteract the infestation.

Kufner played a key role in the development of an electrically heatable artificial turf for soccer fields in cooperation with the Dutch company.

Not only does it heat up in a very short time, but it also has (remotely) controllable heating levels and surprisingly low energy consumption.

No matter whether wovens, knits or nonwovens: Of course, we can also produce raw fabrics to your specifications. We process a wealth of different materials and finenesses: from firm or elastic to super-light spun or textured yarns to rough hair yarns.

WEAVING

On our looms we can fabricate textiles up to a width of 220 cm.

KNITTING

In our knitting mill we can manufacture widths up to 540 cm.

NONWOVEN PRODUCTION

In KUFNER’s own nonwoven plant, we manufacture thermal bonded nonwovens. The production width reaches up to 210 cm.

We can provide our nonwovens with an additional warp insertion. This ensures the lightness of a nonwoven while maintaining the tensile strength of the material.

The yarns and fibers we use include cotton, wool/hair yarns, PES, PA, PLA*, Bico and viscose.

Using a system specially designed for our requirements, we produced the warp beams for our knitting mill ourselves. In this process, up to more than 2,000 yarns with a length of up to 200,000 meters can be drawn onto one warp beam.

The widths of our direct and sectional beams range from 0.5 to 1.5 meters.

For dyeing synthetic and natural fibers, we use the standard dye classes.

Fusible coatings are a Kufner key competence, one that we have steadily developed since our invention of the Double Spot. They are made of thermoplastic adhesives that are applicated using state-of-the-art technology: software-controlled – laser-controlled – spot-on!

But not all dots are the same. We can provide the entire spectrum here: from coarser dots that hold even with bulky materials to superfine ones with 200 CP.

Of course, our coating processes are OEKO-TEX® STeP-zertifiziert certified. Moreover, they are implemented with environmentally compatible raw materials.

THS – textile heating systems by Kufner are especially suitable for use in floor or wall heating systems. Light and safe they are very flat energy saving.

Since these are powered by low-voltage current, it is largely safe if they are externally damaged – e.g. by a nail driven into the wall.

And they remain functioning even if cutting holes is required, for sockets or counters for example.

We consider waste as a valuable resource and handle it with the care and attention it deserves.

All our employees are involved in the associated processes.

Our concept ranges from the avoidance of waste and its reuse to recycling and energy recovery measures from the materials disposed.

Across the company, we strictly segregate paper, cardboard, plastics, film packaging and residual waste.

At each of our sites, we cooperate closely with certified local waste management companies, which document their disposal measures in line with specifications. At present, we have already succeeded in recycling a sizeable portion of all recyclable materials!

CONCEPT REUSE

Waste disposal in manufacturing requires extra care. We, at Kufner, are strongly aware of this. Whether it’s residual fibers or cardboard, scrap iron or glass: we collect waste, completely sort them by type, and separate it according to materials and colors so that it can be re-used.

In one of the latest projects, a possible reasonable re-use of discarded hardware is being conceptualized.

Kufner utilizes exhaust air scrubbers for air purification. These are installed at the downstream of the large-scale plants in our production facilities and work on a purely natural basis, i.e. without chemicals or filters, but only with the use of finely atomized water.

As a result, checks carried out on a regular basis show that our emissions are far below the legal limits that apply to residential areas.

Our plants are equipped with a highly efficient heat recovery system. To this end,we use the discharged heat of our production for the subsequent finishing processes.

SENSITIVE HANDLING

Water is an extremely valuable resource which we therefore use extremely responsibly. We rely on a multiple cycle and reuse it as often as possible. We then clean it in our own biological sewage treatment plant – without using any chemicals – before it is handed over to the municipal sewage network.

We use the sewage sludge produced during biological cleaning to generate energy.

Our OEKO-TEX® STeP certification includes the toughest requirements and the resulting strict controls on our wastewater disposal.

Our competence in coatings – a revolution in the Fashion production industry

Josef and Georg Kufner pioneered the breakthrough of a new invention from the very beginning – the fusible interlining. The advantages were obvious: the time consuming sowing of interlinings became unnecessary. vital for survival, as only a few years later, competitors who did not follow with the technology soon became competitively incapable.

Even the market introduction was revolutionary. During a performance in the ballroom of the Bayrischen Hof in Munich this fascinating new invention was revealed to the entire Fashion industry – the breakthrough.

This move was followed soon after by another key innovation: The patented Kufner Double Spot marked the growth of the fusible interlining. It fixed the problems of the first fusing method: without backlash, neither when ironing nor washing would it harden of deform. The Double Spot is still used worldwide today.

COMPANY FOUNDATION

Bartholomäus Kufner founded the Kufner Watte AG in 1862 and was highly successful in his production of cotton as packaging material and its incorporation into outerwear. Very soon, the young Kufner Firm developed into one of the largest cotton producers in Europe with worldwide clients.

Innovative from the start the production at Kufner was very modern from early on. Kufner was one of the first companies in the Munich Industrial Area which switched to electrical power and light – during a time in which even motorized vehicles were still highly uncommon.

The transformation in the Fashion Industry, from cotton padding, to horsehair interlinings, was pioneered by Kufner at this time. Upon the successful transition, the Kufner horsehair weaving mill was set up at the end of the Second World War. This was the second largest in the industry in Germany. Subsequently, through the annexation of several small foreign textile businesses, the Kufner company established itself firmly as one of the largest businesses in its industry.

In addition to this, the ground-breaking and patented Kufner invention of the horsehair thread enabled the weaving of horsehair interlinings in any desired width for the first time ever. This revolutionary manufacturing technique is one that is still implemented today.

After the war, the company was gradually rebuilt. Innovation and internationalization remain the landmark strategic aspects.
